THE EVERLASTING LIGHT
Jesus Revealed to the world

A Commentary by Constance Vanides

"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined." (Isaiah 9:2)

Etched into the glass of a little case I treasure, are the words from 1 Peter 2 "Living Stones...Chosen & Precious." The glass case was a gift from a friend who honored the date of my becoming a member of the local church congregation. Inside, I keep my treasured stones, polished rocks and a lapidary pendant, the loving work of Papa in his older age. He added the small gold cross on the back of the semi-lucent polished stone as evidence of his faith.

Papa knew the "Living Stone", the Jesus who was "rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious." Papa also knew in his way that we, too, as "...living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood..." (1 Peter 2:5), that we are "...His own special people, called out of darkness into his marvelous light..."

The prophet Isaiah proclaimed the coming of Jesus with light in this well-known often memorized verse at Christmas time:

And then, when baby Jesus was born, an angel of the Lord came to the shepherds, "...keeping watch over their flock by night." and "...stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them..." (Luke 2:8, 9)

Jesus came in the midst of their sins saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." (John 8:12) The Light had come into the world! The same light which shone in the darkness at the time Jesus walked the earth, still walks with us today, having given us His light! "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men." (John 1:4)

He still calls us today. "...out of darkness into His marvelous light;..." Receive the light! For we "...once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy." (1 Peter 2:9)

The New Jerusalem will soon shine with the glory of God illuminating it. No need for the sun or the moon to shine. For the Lamb is its light! "And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it." (Revelation 21:24) I am looking to see this glorious sight! Ask yourself, "Am I written in the Book of Life?"
