DON'T LET THE SPARKS FLY!
Stay connected

A Commentary by Constance Vanides

"Uphold my steps in Your path, that my footsteps may not slip."
(Psalm 17:5 NKJ)

Sizzle, sizzle, zap! Sparks flying up and all around from overhead wires attracted my attention upward. As a young child living in San Francisco, I was often treated by the sight and sounds created when the motorman, charging ahead, not driving the streetcar carefully around a curve, made the trolley line above the car disconnect from its overhead track.

The motorman had to quickly jump off the car and attempt to catch the free-wheeling, wildly flailing-about end of the trolley line and set it carefully back into its track. (No small task!) Connected once again, the car then had the power to continue to its destination.

How like a streetcar we are! We're designed with our feet on the ground in "rails" set for us to move along in a path God has created for us to follow. But we can't move correctly with purpose unless we're connected to the "Power Source." The prophet, in his wisdom, declared,

"O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps." (Jeremiah 10:23)

If it is not in ourselves to know the way to go, who then can show us? Another Old Testament prophet exhorts us,

"Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths. For out of Zion the law shall go forth, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem." (Micah 4:2)

The law went forth, yet it was not enough to change mankind, until the call went out for the Redeemer to step onto the earth, to show us God in person to tell us again,

"Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: 'I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way you should go.'" (Isaiah 48:17)

Finally, it is Jesus who says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6) And, "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5)

Are you following the track laid out for you by your Heavenly Father; led by Jesus, His "Spiritual Motorman" and powered by the Holy Spirit? Well, then, let's meet at the "car barn" of Heaven!
