TURN ASIDE TO SEE
Be Obsessed With God

A Commentary by Constance Vanides

"And Moses said, 'I will turn aside and see this great sight,... " (Exodus 3:3)

It was a miraculous event. "...And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him (Moses) in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, but the bush was not consumed." (Exodus 3:2) We are familiar with this story of how the Lord got Moses' attention. But before God called his name, Moses had to do some investigating for himself.

"Then Moses said,'I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.'" (Exodus 3:3) God expected Moses to respond to the sight of the burning bush, to turn aside. But what exactly does "turn aside" mean and why was this important for Moses to do? In studying this passage I realized it wasn't the common understanding of the words in the sense of "turning away". No, he had to deviate from the path he was on, go out of the way, detour, and purposely seek out what this was, altering his course from then on.

I'm reminded of the first miracle I personally heard about in my own family. I chose to pursue the question I had about my nephew's instant miraculous healing from rheumatic fever at a crusade, through an evangelist who barely had a fourth grade education. I sought to know why everyone with needs at that auditorium did not get a healing. I wanted to learn about this God who heals. I was determined to find out!

As a result of my seeking and eventual surrender, I found God speaking to me! I responded, not exactly with a "Here I am" statement as did Moses, but it was rather like I might have said, "Ok, I'll awaken and get up from my warm, cozy bed and write down what you're telling me." And then, "Ok, I'll type out this message and give it to someone." How surprised I was to find out His words were just what that person needed to hear for that time!

And now, what you read on this website are the messages selected for the two books we published, books we eventually gave away because God did not want us selling them! He said to both my husband and me separately, "I gave these words freely. Freely must you also give!" As a result, more people all over the world have the opportunity to read God's words as He speaks to them as well, with the encouragement God continues to bring.

Who knows what can happen when you come "face to face" with the living God who calls your name and has something to tell you! Don't miss the opportunity to discover what new adventure awaits you. Turn aside to see!
