GOD'S DWELLINGS

A Commentary by Constance Vanides

“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord
sitting on a throne, high and lifted up,
and the train of His robe filled the temple.”

(Isaiah 6:1)

King Uzziah was a good king compared to other kings. However, even he transgressed, became prideful, and died a leper in 739 BC. It was during that year when God sent this vision to Isaiah to reveal something of Himself in a prophesy for all time.

What does the train of God’s robe filling the temple mean? I close my eyes and try to capture the image for myself. My upturned face seeks the marvelous throne of God, high and lifted up, where the King of kings is majestically enthroned! What is this “temple” that is being filled?

The Apostle Paul spoke of the “temple” to new Christians, a message that continues to talk to us today.

“…do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19)

“And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people.” (2 Corinthians 6:16)

The saints to whom Paul refers, build up into the household of God, combining to make that Spiritual holy temple “… in whom you also are being built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.” (Ephesians 2:22)

Return to the prophetic word of God through another prophet, Ezekiel, who informs us we still await for the Jewish Messiah to reign over all of Israel, a Messiah who also expects His Spiritual train to reach all believers that they may be filled with the power of His presence. We become filled not on our own meager strength, but His!

“The nations also will know that I, the LORD, sanctify Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.’” (Ezekiel 37:28)
Do your eyes continue to look up, seeking the One who will fill you, the temple, to overflowing?
